Bloggers Meet Up

Amir Adnan has been a pioneer in the Pakistani Menswear Industry and the brand has been around for a few months. Whenever one talks about Sherwanis or Shalwar Kameez, the one name that pops up in the head is Amir Adnan. This year however, they came out with a western collection for men. They got bloggers from Lahore to meet up at their newly launched flagship store on M.M. Alam Road, Lahore, right after a heavy grooming session at Toni & Guy!

We were hosted by the PR Manager of the company, Ms. Naveen Qazi, who not only coordinated the whole thing but made sure that everyone had a great time. The photography was done by Muhammad Shahroze .

We were asked to pick out the pieces that we liked and got to pair them up with anything in the store or with anything that we wanted to bring to the shoot.

TSM & Co.

I usually do not do brand promotions for a brand unless I have worn, used and truly experienced their product thoroughly. Bloggers these days get free products and somehow write reviews that are as far from the truth as the moon is from Pluto! And on many levels that is not only misguiding to the people who read the reviews but is also unethical on a lot of levels. Having said that, I will try to only promote brands that I truly believe in for their product!

tsmco-logo

TSM & Co. which is an acronym for ‘The Shoe Makers and Company‘ is a brand which operates from Karachi. They specialise in Menswear shoes and they write on their website that ‘No shoes existed that could provide the style sought after by men looking to make a statement…’ which is a very true statement coming from Pakistan! Men in Pakistan, like I have mentioned in a lot of my previous posts, do not have a lot of brands to choose from. For people who truly like the art of styling, they would have to go to great lengths in order to find statement pieces for themselves. Even though TSM & Co. offers a multifarious range of footwear, the brand also offers a few statement pieces for the likes of Fashion aficionados

The Amsterdam Derbies by TSM & Co. (Click on the image above to be guided to their website)

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a pair of Amsterdam Long-wing Derbies with a rubber sole. I quite like the trend that fuses a classic shoe with contemporary design. It led to the innovative creation of a modern hybrid shoe and has been featured on Runways, Fashion Weeks and Pitti Uomos (for the men who follow the news).

Since the brand offers a delivery service to your doorstep, the shoes arrived in a very well designed package. It was rather fancy and the shoes were packed in nice silk dust bags. Now talking about the design of the shoe itself, it comes in a single shade which is Dark Grey. The wing tip extends from the front to the back of the shoe and the rubber sole not only adds a unique look but also serves the purpose of making the shoe extremely lightweight. The insoles have been padded to support the contours of the foot which makes the shoe itself ‘EXTREMELY’ comfortable. And having worn these shoes consecutively for a few days let me just tell you, ‘you have my word for it’.

In order to purchase these shoes or if you are looking for shoes, do check out TSM & Co. You can visit them here. They currently offer free home delivery, cash on delivery services and a 14 day return service if you are not convinced! Could not get any simpler than that.

For those of you who are in Karachi, Pakistan, do visit them at:

Blogging is Hard !

So I was thinking the other day how hard blogging can be sometimes. For most of us it is our passion and we continue to jot down our feelings and opinions about everything happening in our surroundings, but when you talk about pursuing a career in blogging, or making money out of blogging, it is a whole other ball game that not only requires ambition but also a high level of tolerance, patience and perseverance! In Pakistan alone, if I were to start a blog about Brides, Fashion and/or what the elite of the country wore to the latest wedding ceremony, I would bring in loads and loads of followers/readers.

HOWEVER, Me, as Dappistan, I chose to blog about menswear and mens fashion – which focused more on men from the South Asian regions!

Now the next question that would pop up inevitably is – Why Did I Start Blogging?

To answer that I will have to tell you that growing up in Lahore, Pakistan, I have seen how men haven’t ever taken Fashion seriously. Well by Fashion I did not expect one to walk down the streets in a Flashy Elton John ensemble, but what I did expect was for men to pay attention to what they were wearing. See Fashionable people are usually stereotyped in South Asian regions for being feminine, which is wrong for a battery of reason and thankfully times have changed with the advent of Social Media. But then again, even now you would not get to see men paying a lot of attention to detail.

Elton John (Source: E! Online)

If I compare people from the West to people from South Asian countries, I don’t think it would be wrong to say that in the west people build a lifestyle for themselves and then try to maintain in. In our part of the world we do not really aspire for a LifeStyle, a majority of people would just aspire for things. Now if you take it a step further and think about it, all these “Things” we run after and create synergy which has been termed as “LifeStyle” so it is important to know that every part of your being is not only reflected through your personality or the way you talk or any other physical aspect, but it is also portrayed through your lifestyle – which is the way you dress, the way you live, your discipline, your civic sense, your aesthetic, everything! My reason to start blogging was that I wanted people to realise this. I wanted MEN to try and put effort in the way they looked to others around them (especially Pakistani men).

Working on Dappistan has been a journey in itself, and a rather cathartic one, while being illuminating at the same time. Blogging for Men is hard as F*** because a lot of guys are hesitant in sharing their opinions about it. Maintaining followers seems like a struggle sometimes because you have to worry about content that will keep the followers engaged! On top of that attracting more followers feels like a ‘CRUSADE’!

Yes Gentlemen, getting you to follow and engage is a lot harder especially when it comes to topics like Menswear, Life style and Fashion!

But on a lighter note! I shall continue to Blog about Menswear regardless of how hard it may seem and regardless of all the times that I think about giving up on it!

Peace!

2015 : Trends and Faux Pas

As featured in Express Tribune (Pakistan)

Its that time of the year when sweaters come out, fireplaces are lit up and when hot chocolate/coffee becomes our kryptonite. The year is coming to an end and as we bid farewell to 2015 and welcome 2016, lets go over the biggest trends and faux pas of this past year.

2000px-Flag_of_Taliban_(original).jpg

Statement Coats

The Fall/ Winter campaigns this year were big on Oversized Statement coats and Long length coats. Double Breasted coats were trending everywhere and bringing the whole retro look back to the racks in menswear shops.

Draping Coat

We don’t know if Kim Kardashian is the one to be held responsible for making this trend not only popular among the ladies, but the trend picked up very quickly amongst the men of the world. It was big on the streets of some of the biggest fashion capitals of the world. And to be honest, its not a bad trend considering how its very difficult to wear layers during the period when the weather is transitioning from Summer to Fall. Its not too hot and its not too cold yet and wearing a coat makes you sweat.

Solution: Just drape the coat instead of actually wearing it.

Longline Shirts/StreetWear

Some people might disagree with this trend because its not for everyone but 2015 was the year of Streetwear. Long-lined T shirts and shirts in general were Big! Its not everyones cup of tea but for those who can really pull it off.

Yeezys / Trainers

Now if it werent for the YEEZYs. Kanye West’s collaboration with Adidas and this fabric trainer was the most sought after shoe of all time. It was like the hunger games! Fans cued outside stores for ages before getting a pair and most of them had to go back without anything. The shoes originally costed $200 but after the soaring demand, the shoes were being resold over E Bay and other platform for as much as $1500. Well clearly anything touched by Lord Yeezus turns to Gold. Literally!

Monogram Slippers

Formal slippers were already a major trend for men but 2015 was when guys started getting custom monograms and embroidery on their Slippers/loafers. A nice way to put an individualistic spin on things.

Color Trends:  Camel and Military Green

Two colors that were bigger than the staple greys, blues, blacks and whites were ‘Army Green’ and ‘Camel/Nude’. For complete mono-color looks to statement coats, both the colors were big in street style.

Metal Cap Shoes

One name : Giuseppe Zanotti. The one man who single handedly made the whole metallic cap – toe shoe a big thing. He was also the one who introduced metal in footwear for men.

Wide Legged Trousers

The wide legged trouser was big on the Runway. Again, a very retro trend that picked up this year. It is a tricky trend because not everyone knows how to pull it off but for those who do, it some how works out and looks cool.

Turtle Neck

Turtle necks and roll over sweat shirts/ sweaters have made a comeback this year. They have never really gone out of style but this year they were seen everywhere from the ramps to the streets.

Chelsea Boots

The one thing that comes to mind with Chelsea Boots is British Fashion and British Street Style. You can blame Harry Styles of One Direction for this but the trend is nice. They have become a sort of wardrobe staple for this fall and look nice too. Considering how they can make an entire ensemble look semi formal.

Man Bun

For me, the biggest Faux Pas for 2015 was the Man Bun. A lot of guys have been seen sporting the whole trend but for some reason it just has gone a little over board. ‘How to make a man bun’ was one of the most Googled phrases of 2015 which is absolutely ridiculous. They look good on some people but the worst kind of man buns is the one with the undercut and the pony tail which is just plain absurd.

Super Low V- Neck

Okay. Lets take a moment to mourn the death of fashion with these super low V Necks *takes a moment*.

Now that we have recovered from the trauma, lets talk about how this trend was just – BAD! Guys with a nice build might have some how worked this out but 2015 was Not the year for a low V Neck. And for those of you who still have this in your closet, please burn your low cut shirts.

low.jpg

Trademark Logo Fashion and Accessories

For some odd and incomprehensible reason, guys from the South Asian Regions and Arab countries really like wearing accessories and clothes plastered with Trademark Logos. And lets be honest, it looks bad. Whether its the monogram Gucci print or huge belt buckles with the alphabets LV, H (Hérmes) or G (Gucci)  on them. And the idea of wearing Polo shirts and then tucking them in to show off your branded belts is a big FAUX PAS. So please. Stop!

Half Sleeve Button Downs

Half sleeve button down shirts have been a very common piece of clothing that one can easily buy. But for us, its not the best of trends. Its just off-putting and seems like a disproportionate mistake. Its better to go with a full sleeve button down and fold the sleeves.

plaid-short-sleeve-button-down

Ugly Trainers

Yes we know that trainers have been trending for a long while but that doesn’t mean you get to wear Grandpa Jogger-like trainers! If you do like the trend then please invest in a nice pair of trainers. Research a little before you end up buying a pair because even some of the biggest brands sell the ugliest trainers! So don’t be to brand obsessed and look for something that is aesthetically pleasing.

3 Quarter Length Trousers

3 Quarter length trousers, more popularly known as Bermuda pants in our part of the world are a huge mistake. Please just do yourself a favor and dispose off all such items in your closet. These pants are odd and are not trendy in anyway. Nothing can justify the use of these pants unless youre a fisherman or your profession requires you to wear them (which is highly unlikely). As alternative for these is what is more popularly knows “Cropped Pants”. Cropped pants look nice, they provide a semi formal look, they don’t look too shabby and they show off your shoes. So if you are fond of showing off some skin then you can always get a pair of cropped pants or crop of a pair of pants that you already own.

Patterned Button Downs

Horrendous Printed Button Downs = BIG NO = FAUX PAS OF ALL TIME.

Gentlemen, please get ride of the paisleys or awkward stripes! They do not look good. What you should be wearing is a nice crisp plain shirt. Plain shirts are always a safe bet. They go with practically everything. You can wear them formally and casually. The best thing to do is to invest in nice plain white and neutral colored shirts.

Football League T-Shirts

Gentlemen, we don’t mean to offend anyone and we understand how serious you are about your favorite football leagues, but you don’t have to advocate your fanaticism by wearing your respective Football league T- Shirts (unless you’re playing football). If you are into sportswear, there are quite a few other options. Its 2015 (and soon will be 2016), and no one will question your loyalty to your favorite league if you don’t wear those jerseys.

Why is Fashion so Female Centric?

Going through magazines and browsing online, I’m sure most of you would also feel that Fashion is a very Female Centric term. And by Female Centric I’m not trying to be misogynistic or anti-feminist, but the thing is that this is an Industry where from models to streetstyle to Bridal Fashion, it all usually focuses on women.

Particularly in South Asian countries, especially Pakistan where the society is more patriarchal and chauvinistic as opposed to other countries. It would make sense as to why Fashion is not seen as something that men could or should associate to. Where young boys and men are usually nurtured in a way that Fashion becomes a sort of taboo and guys who like to dress up well usually become social pariahs.

In Pakistan, this whole concept really takes shape as the Fashion Industry, which is one of the most lucrative economic assets for the country, is purely a female centric notion (for the lack of a better word). You see, if we break it down, Fashion weeks are 3 to 4 days events with a majority of brands showing collections for women. When it comes to Fashion for men in Pakistan, sadly most people in the Industry would link it to Grooms’ Fashion. Where elaborate Sherwanis and Kurtas somehow become the sole link between Fashion and Men in Pakistan.

Breaking it down further, there are very few brands for men in Pakistan! I can literally sit here and list down most if not all of them. If a guy wants to get a suit made, he would have a potential list of 5 – 6 brands/shops that he can go to, to find the suit he wants. You have Republic by Omar Farooq, Ammar Belal, Munib Nawaz, Amir Adnan and now upcoming brands like Jermyn Street Clothing and Fibonacci Bespoke. Which is why a majority of men would chose to go the Bespoke way and get a suit made for themselves in a way that pleases them.

Somehow all Red-carpet events seem to focus more on what women wear and not as much on what men wear. And if you think about it, from a business perspective of these Media houses, its probably because Men in this part of the world do not really give a rats ass about what another guy wore to an event. Women on the other hand would screen magazine images, carefully gauge social media trends, conclude what new length of Lawn Kurtas seems to be more popular amongst the masses, what all the rich and elite are wearing to weddings, if a velvet choli seems to be more in trend or not, and the list goes on and on. Men on the other hand would just take out whatever touches their hands first in their closet and wear it. Sadly, thats how guys in this part of the world usually operate! A weird thing that I have personally noticed is how the richest of men in Pakistan look like they had their great-grandfathers pick out their clothes. It just doesnt add up. I mean if youre worth a billion dollars as per Forbes and other magazines, why can’t you spend a little time and get a nice suit made for yourself?

But why is that? Why cant guys seem to think about Fashion and Style and being dapper! I mean your style is a reflection of your personality. Your style defines how seriously you take your own being when it comes to your priorities in life! Your style is an expression of your being. Men should not really be afraid of figuring that bit out. If we go back to the a few decades, I think the men in Pakistan and South Asia were more Fashion conscious. They spent time on themselves! If you sit with your grandfathers you would know, how they are more particular about clothes than most of their grandsons. Having the perfect shave, a decent haircut, wearing coats and overcoats, polished shoes; everything about their generation seemed more dapper.

Well it would not to wrong to say that over the years Men have become more Fashion conscious. Even in our part of the world, young guys have started paying more attention to the way their grooming and the way they dress up. In my opinion, the advent of international institutions like Toni & Guy, led by the very well groomed and dapper Shammal Qureshi (Creative Director of the Northern Region in Pakistan), paved the way for others to fill a void. After the brand opened its Salon in Lahore, things changed tremendously. People started realizing the importance of a well groomed look, something which was not really happening on the same scale before because such services were not being provided for men really. Moreover, with the evolution of media and pop culture that is being directly marketed through social media, young men have started paying more attention to the way clothes fit. Even if it’s a simple pair of jeans, now a days guys would go an extra mile to make sure that their skinny jeans fit them properly and their blazers don’t droop around the shoulders. We still have a long way to go but at least there has been a visible progression in the right direction. Social Media has played a huge role in all of this, and if you come to think of it, it has only blown up over the last few years. Instagram curates all these street style images from around the world and what better way of gauging trends than by observing what men wear on the streets of some of the biggest cosmopolitans of the world.

So gentlemen, its a request, rather a plea, please start investing in yourself. Spend a little time to iron the t-shirt that you wear so casually because it reflects the person you are.

When a woman wears a pair of high heels, her entire physicality and stature changes. She becomes more poised, her back becomes more erect, the way she walks, her gait changes completely and she somehow turns into a creature made out of glass! Sophistication kicks in and her high heels put her on a raised pedestal and makes her feel good about herself. Its the same thing with men. When men wear suits, the same things happen. The posture, body language, walk, everything changes. We become more conscious of ourselves because well thats how the brain works. One starts feeling good about oneself and then you try to do whatever you can to maintain that.

So if you like the idea of being stylish and fashionable, be it. It really wont compromise your masculinity.

Peace!

Amir Adnan: Bloggers Galore

This past Sunday on the 22nd of November, Pakistani Menswear Trailblazer, Amir Adnan, hosted a Blogger style-storm at their outlet in Dolmen Mall, Karachi. Who would’nt want to be in a shop exclusively and have the license to wear whatever they want

The day started off with all the boys, our bloggers turned models – Amir Bukhari, Asad Salman Malik, Muhammad Moiz, Nasr Qazi, Umair Mirza and Yildrim Butt, heading over to NGents (Nabilas) for a little grooming session.

The day was filled with music, food and zealous K-town bloggers who picked and styled their looks that ranged from eastern to western wear.

The guys seemed to have had a blast as they were being photographed by Khawer Jadoon, a champ photographer. It was like an invite-only exclusive party inside a flagship store. AND THERE WAS A DJ! Yes all of this was happening all while DJ Asif enlivened the ambience with his music.

Tradition meets Fashion

There is something insanely stylish and intriguing about fashion when it is combined with traditional elements. It is not only a way for people to stand out but its an expression of an homage to ones own roots. Recently the Italian Fashion house Dolce and Gabbana, has started shifting its focus to Sicilian Traditions. Considering that Domenico Dolce, one half of the designer duo, traces his roots back to Sicily. The campaigns started focusing on Family values with models being chosen from every generation to give the viewer a family oriented image of the brad. Their entire collections gradually started showcasing reds and vibrant color palettes, polka dots, frills, Matadors and extensive use of embroidery.

The result: Awe inspiring and extremely stylish.
